Princeton reveals double-standard in denying appeal for an abstinence center while promoting immoral lectures Posted November 25, 2009
Princeton University recently rejected, for the second year, a student proposal to establish a Center for Abstinence and Chastity. The University has supported the establishment of centers for other people groups, such as the Women’s Center and the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender (“LGBT”) Center, that provide encouragement and support for people taking different views on sex and relationships.
For the past five years, a group of students have advocated abstinence and chastity at Princeton through a student group – the Anscombe Society – in large part because certain university programs and centers were biased in favor of sexually libertine ideas.
In Princeton President Shirley Tilghman’s email rejection of the petition she states, “it [your argument] implies that the Women’s and LGBT Centers are there to support a non-chaste or non-abstinent lifestyle, which is not the case, and would be considered offensive by both centers.”
However, two events that were promoted or sponsored by the LGBT Center discussed non-abstinent and non-chaste lifestyles. The events, held November 17, 2009 and November 18, 2009 in University facilities, featured self-described “pornographer” and “anal sexpert” Tristan Taormino. Her topics: “Beyond Monogamy: The Case for Open Relationships”; and “Queer Sexualities”, which addressed the question “How can we learn to embrace and cultivate our erotic power in order to build confidence and create fulfilling relationships?
Princeton is only the latest stop for Ms. Taormino, having spoken at Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Harvard, Yale, and other colleges.
“Denying the establishment of a center that supports students who affirm the importance of the family, marriage, and integrity for the role of sex and sexuality, while providing encouragement and support for people who take a different view on matters of sex and relationships, is clearly a double-standard,” commented Matthew W. Bennett, founder and president of Christian Union.
Please:
• Pray that the University’s administration approves the founding of a pro-abstinence center the next time it is introduced. Pray that it also closes the tap on promoting immoral lectures. Also petition God to bless and give strength to the Christian ministries and groups promoting traditional morality on campus.
• Because the University cares about its role in society, I ask you to contact the Administration with your respectful and thoughtful arguments. We believe the University can be persuaded to allow the creation of an Abstinence and Chastity Center with strong arguments.
